Jesus is the only Son of God, eternally
begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things
were made.
Jesus Christ, born about 2000 years ago,
was God's son
He is also the second "person"
of the one God, the third being the Holy Spirit
That is, he is the Son of the Father and
yet is also himself God
Despite Jesus being born 2000 years ago,
the Son of God existed before the creation of the world.

For us and for our salvation he came
down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from
the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
Because of God's love for us he gave up
being The Almighty and became a man in the person of God's Son, Jesus of
Nazareth.
Jesus is therefore both God and human.
It sounds like a contradiction in terms to
be both, like being both a square and a triangle. It is really more like
being both a square and red.
Jesus was not just a "meat
puppet," God wearing a human body. He was God become human,
completely.

For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.
God gave himself up for us completely.
God did not just offer us a helping hand
or a little boost so we could make it on our own.
Remember, Jesus was not a "meat
puppet." God the Son died on the cross. It was not just an act.

On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the
right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the
dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
For as in Adam, all die, so also in Christ
shall all be made alive. Alleluia!
The life of God is eternal, not simply
unending but unbounded by time. In the death and resurrection of Jesus
that life was given for us and given to us. We, like Jesus
the God-man, are given the chance to be made "God-persons," sharers in
the eternal life of God.
The life of God is a gift, a free gift,
with no strings attached. We could not earn it if we tried. All that
is left for us to do is say "Yes please!" and "Thank you!"
We say "Yes, please!" in
Baptism, the ceremony in which we ritually take part in the death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ.
We say "Thank you!" by doing
what we think pleases God. We do not, for example, help the poor because
we are "trying to get into heaven." We help the poor because it
pleases God. It is very much the same as being in love. We bring
home flowers to please our loved one, not so that they will love us more.
Because God gave his life to us, out of love we respond by giving our lives to
God.
