Choir / Choirmaster The St. Mary’s Choir is a group of approximately fourteen people, under the direction of Choirmaster Matthew West, whose primary ministry is to assist with worship at the 11 A.M. Service. Song is most often accompanied by the Pilcher Organ but keyboard and a capella hymns and anthems are also used in St. Mary’s liturgies. The choir is a volunteer group of men and women who also make time for singing services in other Episcopal churches and providing the community with occasional evensongs, traditional and contemporary. The innate ability to sing is a wonderful asset but the faithfulness attendance at rehearsals and services, as well as the ability to listen are most appreciated.
Matthew West has served professionally in various Roman Catholic, Episcopal, and Protestant denominations since his start in 2002. After studying piano for four years, he began to study the organ at the private and now collegiate level; in addition to classical voice study. Prior to his arrival at St. Mary’s, Matthew served as the Interim Organist & Choirmaster for Trinity Episcopal Church in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
Matthew is a confirmed communicant in good standing at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, Knoxville, Tennessee and a member of the Knoxville Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. He resides in Knoxville and is a full-time psychology student at the University of Tennessee.
