Labyrinth

The labyrinth is a symbol for the spiritual journey.  The labyrinth is located on the southeast part of the property and is open to the all who wish to walk the path as a form of prayer or walking meditation.  This particular labyrinth is patterned after a seven circuit classic labyrinth in Derby, England and was built by members of St. Peter's Church in Lewes, Delaware.  Rocks with prayers for our community and church are scattered throughout the labyrinth.

Christians have walked labyrinths for hundreds of years.  It is not a maze because there is only one path with no tricks or dead ends.  In the Middle Ages, when pilgrimages to Jerusalem were impossible because of war, Christians would use labyrinths as a safe form of pilgrimage.  Well-known labyrinths are located in Chartres Cathedral France and Grace Cathedral, San Francisco.

Suggestions for walking the labyrinth:

  • Before you begin walking, pick a bible verse, phrase or question to think about.

  • As you walk in, bring your intention to God.

  • The center is a place of special prayer; stay as long as you wish.

  • The walk out brings what you have learned back into the world.
