Christian Education

Elementary Curriculum

From the age of four until they finish the third grade, children at St. Raphael’s are invited to participate in Godly Play, a Montessori style curriculum. The curriculum teaches children the art of using religious language - parable, sacred story, silence, and liturgical action - to help them become more fully aware of the mystery of God's presence in their lives.

Godly Play takes place during the first half of the 10:30 Family Service so that the children can join the congregation for communion. St. Raphael’s currently has a paid coordinator for this program as well as volunteer teachers who range in age from seventeen to seventy. Parishioners consider Godly Play to be the first of many positive Christian formation experiences.

The Journey to Adulthood

The majority of St. Raphael’s young people between the ages of 12 and 18 are involved in The Journey to Adulthood program. The program is based on the Anglican Tradition and widely used by the Episcopal Church. The program is divided into three segments: Rite-13, J2A and Young Adults in the Church (YAC). The program is taught by enthusiastic adult volunteers.

The Rite-13 curriculum assists young people as they take the first steps of passage away from their families and into adulthood. The program culminates with a liturgical celebration of the gift of womanhood and manhood.

The core of the Journey to Adulthood program is the J2A class for youth aged 13 through 16. There are four key sections to the J2A curricula: Self, Social, Service, and Spirituality. The class culminates in a holy pilgrimage which expands the youths’ spiritual experience. The youth participate in activities to raise pilgrimage funds for themselves and their adult leaders. Recent pilgrims traveled to Colorado and Ireland. The YAC program, for youth age 16 to 18, encourages and provides opportunities to take an active role in all ministries of the church. The YAC groups are youth led (with adult mentors) and often serve as a positive peer group for teens entering adulthood.

Adult Christian Formation

A variety of adult programs are offered throughout the year. Study classes meet on Sunday between the services. Evening programs during Special liturgical seasons such as Lent and Advent provide additional opportunities.

Confirmation

On the Bishop’s visit, confirmation is offered to any baptized parishioner over the age of twelve. Inquirers Classes are offered in preparation for this sacrament.
