"The first Episcopal Church missionaries to the area started teaching in Proctor in 1870. They converted the building originally known as Hiram McGuire's 'Mountain Inn,' a large, frame hotel and tavern, into a mission school. In the early 1880s Episcopal preachers and teachers added classes in the new Lee County Court House and in various store buildings in Beattyville."
"During the winter of 1887-1888, the Episcopal High School pictured above was built on the hillside above where St. Thomas Episcopal Church (built 1894-1896) still stands. The High School building was destroyed by fire in 1909, and was not replaced due to the rise of more and better city and county schools. The Proctor Mission continued until the time of World War I."
